Our Commitment to Externalization

Within AstraZeneca, externalization is not a short-term stopgap to backfill the pipeline. It is a long-term commitment to step up our access to the world of scientific innovation that resides outside of our laboratories.

In addition to traditional in-licensing opportunities, our externalization activities span acquisitions, risk sharing deals, spin outs, equity stakes, divestments and out-licensing deals. Because no two deals are the same, we work with potential partners to structure deals through customized approaches that allow both partners to leverage unique capabilities and assets in order to achieve common goals.

Strategic Planning & Business Development (SPBD) supports the delivery of this key strategic priority through a globally integrated cross business organization. A number of strategically important areas have been identified to best position us to maintain our position as one of the world's leading healthcare providers. Embracing new science and emerging technologies, whilst applying modern thinking to all disciplines and projects ensures that AstraZeneca's research is at the forefront of innovation.

How do we evaluate your opportunity?

The aim of Strategic Planning and Business Development is to conduct a prompt yet comprehensive evaluation of opportunities.

SPBD are able to call on the expertise of specialists, including scientists and clinicians, who serve as integrated members of our SPBD Evaluation teams. By fully utilising their in-depth knowledge we are able to expedite all potential partnerships ensuring the right people review and evaluate all external opportunities as quickly as possible. Our Evaluation Teams are therapeutically aligned but work together cross functionally to ensure each opportunity is handled by the appropriate key decision maker as a first step in the process.
