Martin Mackay, PhD
President R&D, AstraZeneca

Martin MackayDr Martin Mackay leads our global R&D organisation tasked with advancing a portfolio of investigational medicines across both small molecules and biologics. He is a member of the AstraZeneca Senior Executive Team, the company’s Portfolio Investment Board and Science Committee. Prior to joining AstraZeneca in 2010 he was Pfizer’s President of Pharma Therapeutics Research & Development. His career at Pfizer spanned 15 years during which he held various leadership roles including President of global Research & Development. He serves on the Scientific and Regulatory Committee of the US industry association PhRMA, co-chairs the US-India BioPharma & Healthcare Summit Advisory Board and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Lincoln, UK.

Anders Ekblom, MD, PhD, DDS, Associate Professor
Head of Science and Technology Integration Office, AstraZeneca

Anders EkblomDr Anders Ekblom leads our Science and Technology Integration Office, which aims to identify future science and technology trends and strengthen our efforts in precompetitive collaboration and open innovation. He most recently led our Global Medicines Development organisation and joined Astra in 1993 from the Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, where he was a senior lecturer and Director for the Perianesthetic Unit. He is President AstraZeneca Sweden AB, and Director of the board of Albireo Ltd. He is an Associate Professor of Physiology at the Karolinska Institute, a medical doctor board certified in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, and a doctor of dental surgery. He has long been active in both basic and clinical research resulting in more than 60 original publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters..

Briggs Morrison, MD, PhD
Executive Vice President, Global Medicines Development, AstraZeneca

Briggs MorrisonDr Briggs Morrison leads our global late stage development organisation for both small molecules and biologics. He joined AstraZeneca in 2012 from Pfizer, where he was Head, Medical Excellence, overseeing Development, Medical Affairs, Safety and Regulatory Affairs for the company’s human health businesses.
Briggs received a BS (Biology) degree from Georgetown University and an MD degree from the University of Connecticut, followed by an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, a fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a post-doctoral research fellowship in Genetics at Harvard Medical School.

Briggs has a track record of successfully developing novel medicines while at Merck and Pfizer, and he is the author of many original scientific publications in oncology, in other areas of medicine, and the conduct of clinical trials.

Menelas (Mene) Pangalos, PhD
Executive Vice President, Innovative Medicines, AstraZeneca

Mene PangalosDr Mene Pangalos leads our global discovery research and early development activities for small molecules. He joined AstraZeneca in 2010 from Pfizer where he was appointed Senior VP and Chief Scientific Officer in Neuroscience Research at the end of 2009, following the acquisition of Wyeth. Prior to this, he was EVP and Head of Discovery Research at Wyeth. He is an Adjunct Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania and a visiting professor at the Wolfson Centre for Age-Related Diseases (King’s College London). He has edited the book “Understanding G-protein coupled receptors in the CNS” and a number of journal issues focused on drug discovery in the CNS. He has also published more than 120 peer-reviewed articles in well-known scientific journals.

Bahija Jallal, PhD
Executive Vice President, Research & Development, MedImmune

Bahija JallalDr Bahija Jallal leads our global discovery research and early biopharmaceutical and clinical development activities for biologics at MedImmune. She joined MedImmune in 2006 from Chiron Corporation where she served as vice president, drug assessment and development, and successfully established the company’s translational medicine group. Prior to Chiron, she worked at Sugen, Inc. where she held positions of increasing responsibility leading to senior director, research. She received a master’s degree in biology from the Universite de Paris VII in France, and her doctorate in physiology from the University of Pierre & Marie Curie in Paris. She conducted her postdoctoral research at the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany.
