Mikael, medicinal chemist
AstraZeneca Research - Medicinal Chemist

“It’s an incredible resource to be surrounded by colleagues with such diverse knowledge. It’s like having a big family that’s always there to help out.”

“ I studied chemistry at the royal technical college, Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, in Sweden. It was in my second year of upper secondary school that I first realised that chemistry was the direction I wanted to take with my career. I was just sort of bitten by the chemistry bug. Everything fell into place. Everything felt both easy and challenging. It was a very exciting time.”

“My love of chemistry has grown since I became a professional pharmaceutical chemist. Knowing that my work in discovering new molecules and compounds can have an impact in fighting illness and can help people is an indescribable feeling.”

In addition to his work as Senior Researcher in Discovery, Mikael is also involved in an internal project that looks at ways of using IT to make research more efficient. “I enjoy collaborating with talented colleagues. Together we make a powerful creative team and explore new ways of working and smart IT solutions that will help chemists discover new medicines faster and more efficiently in the future. Projects are a very important work form at AstraZeneca.”

Mikael has worked at AstraZeneca for twelve years and currently works at AstraZeneca in Sweden. Some years ago he spent a year at Astra Zeneca in Boston. “That was a great year with my colleagues in Boston. I made many new contacts and had a host of new experiences. That’s one of the major benefits of working at AstraZeneca – the possibility of working abroad at other AstraZeneca sites and the feeling of belonging to a large network of people from many different countries and backgrounds. The team spirit and the sense of making an important contribution are very strong at AstraZeneca. ”
