Global HR principles

Recruitment
Ours is an open and exciting environment, which provides challenge and stimulus whilst emphasising respect for the individual and integrity in all that we do.

We are an equal opportunities employer welcoming people from diverse backgrounds. Recruitment processes are required to be consistent with our core values. We aim to make selection decisions as quickly as possible and believe that all candidates, whether successful or not, should be offered objective and constructive feedback.

Diversity
AstraZeneca values the diversity of individual talents and creative potential that every employee brings to our business.

At AstraZeneca, we define diversity more broadly than gender, race and ethnicity. Our approach takes account of all the ways employees are different, including visible differences such as culture, language, age and disability, and less visible differences such as education, functional expertise and family situation.

We aim to promote and maintain a culture of diversity where appointments to jobs, reward and personal success depend solely on individual ability and performance.

Every person within AstraZeneca is valued for themselves and as a colleague. We all have something to contribute and to learn from each other. And this understanding of our interdependence and enthusiasm to share knowledge and ideas across boundaries is the source of AstraZeneca’s energy and innovation.

Human rights
AstraZeneca supports the principles set out in the UN Declaration of Human Rights. These include freedom from torture and arbitrary arrest, the right to a fair trial and equality before the law. Compliance with these principles is mandatory for all employees and representatives of the company.

Collective bargaining and trade union membership
All our employees have the right to be a member of a trade union.  We have agreements with trade unions in a number of countries where collective bargaining is customary practice within a country’s legal framework and where employees support it.

Grievance/complaint procedures
In the case of a grievance or complaint, employees can either consult their line manager or their business HR manager. Local policies and systems are in place, designed to meet country-specific needs.

In addition, our Legal Department and Group Internal Audit are available on a confidential basis as independent sources of advice. Where confidential phone lines are available, these can be used to raise issues of concern. So long as this is done in good faith, AstraZeneca assures individual employees who raise issues that they will be protected from any adverse impact on their employment as a result.

Minimum wage and working hours
As a minimum, AstraZeneca complies with the legal requirements regarding wages and working hours in each country in which we operate. Compliance is monitored locally and systems are currently being developed to monitor performance globally.

Child labour
AstraZeneca only employs adults, as defined by the labour law in each country in which we operate. Occasionally we employ young people who have not yet reached adulthood in their particular country (eg summer student placements). When we do, we comply with the labour laws of that country. Compliance is monitored locally and systems are currently being developed to monitor performance globally.

Workforce reductions
Our overall aim is to maintain a workforce that has the right balance of skills, experience and knowledge to meet our business requirements. If we have to make reductions to our workforce, we ensure that individuals are treated with respect and fairness. Our procedures aim to reduce the impact of redundancy by, for example, providing sufficient time and support (such as training) to displaced employees.
