- ASTRAZENECA SUBMITS FIRST REGULATORY APPLICATION FOR ITS NEW ASTHMA MEDICATION SYMBICORT® VIA EUROPEAN MUTUAL RECOGNITION AstraZeneca today announced that the regulatory application for Symbicort®, budesonide and formoterol in a single inhaler (Turbuhaler®) for maintenance therapy in asthma, has been submitted to the authorities in Sweden as the first step in the European Union's mutual recognition procedure. Applications for the new product will follow in early 2000 in further countries.

- ASTRAZENECA ENTITLED TO INTERLOCUTORY* INJUNCTION TO PREVENT MARKETING OF A GENERIC VERSION OF OMEPRAZOLE IN ISRAEL AstraZeneca today announced that the Tel Aviv District Court has held that AstraZeneca is entitled to an interlocutory injunction in Israel based on the formulation patent, to prevent Dexcel Ltd. from marketing a generic omeprazole product.

- ASTRAZENECA DIVESTS TWO CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINES IN SCANDINAVIAN AND EUROPEAN MARKETS TO COMPLY WITH EC MERGER CONDITIONS AstraZeneca today announced the partial divestment of two cardiovascular medicines, in Scandinavian and European markets, to comply with European Commission merger conditions set in approving the merger of Astra, of Sweden, and Zeneca, of the UK, earlier this year.

- ASTRAZENECA SUBMITS FIRST REGULATORY APPLICATION FOR ITS NEW PPI VIA EUROPEAN MUTUAL RECOGNITION AstraZeneca today announced that a regulatory application for H199/18, a new proton pump inhibitor (PPI), has been submitted to authorities in Sweden, acting as rapporteur country in the European Union's mutual recognition procedure. The new pharmaceutical contains the active substance esomeprazole.

- ASTRAZENECA's OMEPRAZOLE FORMULATION PATENTS AstraZeneca today announced that the Tel Aviv District Court has upheld the formulation patents for omeprazole. This follows an appeal by AstraZeneca and the Israeli company Unipharm. The District Court found that the inventions subject to the patents constituted a significant advance over prior art and that they were not obvious. Omeprazole is the substance used in Losec®.

- ACCOLATE APPROVED BY FDA FOR CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA SEVEN YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER A new paediatric formulation of the popular asthma medication, 'Accolate' has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in patients as young as seven years of age. The product will be available in a 10-milligram, non-flavored mini-tablet specifically designed for children. Recommended dosing is one 10-mg mini-tablet twice daily, even during symptom free periods.

- ASTRAZENECA TO APPEAL DENIAL OF OMEPRAZOLE INTERLOCUTORY INJUNCTIONS IN GERMANY AstraZeneca today announced it will appeal against a decision, not yet received in written form, by the District Court in Munich not to grant AstraZeneca's request for preliminary injunctions to prevent CT-Arzneimittel GmbH and Stadapharm GmbH to continue to sell generic omeprazole products in Germany. The decision was based on procedural grounds. The reasons given by the Court were that AstraZeneca had not filed the requests for preliminary injunctions soon enough after these generic products were put on

- ARIMIDEX CHALLENGES TAMOXIFEN AS GOLD STANDARD TREATMENT IN WOMEN WITH ADVANCED POST-MENOPAUSAL BREAST CANCER For the last 25 years the 'gold standard' treatment for women with breast cancer has been tamoxifen. New data presented today at the 10th European Cancer Conference in Vienna, Austria, challenges this dominant position. 'Arimidex', a selective non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor, has been shown to be at least as effective and well-tolerated as tamoxifen and, in one of the two international studies reported, the data indicate that 'Arimidex' is more effective.

- GENERIC CHALLENGE TO LOSEC WITHDRAWN IN CANADA The patent protection for omeprazole, the active substance in Losec, expires in Canada in July 1999. However, due to national patent legislation, in Canada the opportunity for generic competition to Losec has existed since 1996 through compulsory licensing under AstraZeneca's substance patent. AstraZeneca has several other patents approved in Canada, including a formulation patent.
