In recent years AstraZeneca has become the leading multinational pharmaceutical company in China in prescription sales, has established 25 sales offices in major cities across the country, created a $134m state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Wuxi, Jiang Su Province, and has committed a further $100m to Research and Development.
Now in its second year, Cathay Pacific’s annual business awards scheme is designed to recognise and reward UK business dynamism and success in Hong Kong and China. Three award categories were open for entry and AstraZeneca was named winner of the Pacific Star Award as a UK-based company demonstrating exceptional commitment to business in China and or Hong Kong. The company beat 30 other applicants from a variety of sectors ranging across manufacturing, retail and academia.
AstraZeneca’s long history within the region dates back to 1898 and company currently employs 2900 people in China and 80 in Hong Kong. The company was one of the first multinational companies to conduct large-scale international multi-centre clinical trials and were the first to establish a clinical research unit in China. Since 1996 AstraZeneca has conducted 37 clinical projects and is currently conducting 11 on-going projects, covering five therapy areas: gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, oncology and neuroscience.
In 2001, a $134m state-of-the-art manufacturing facility was inaugurated in Wuxi, which has the first ever high-rise computer controlled warehouse in mainland China. Recently the company announced a further $35m investment in the site.
In May 2006, AstraZeneca announced its intention to invest $100m in R&D which will be focused primarily on establishing the AstraZeneca Innovation Centre China (ICC), a leading edge biomarker research centre initially targeting cancer therapies specifically relevant for Chinese patients.
As well as transferring manufacturing and R&D technology into China, AstraZeneca is educating and updating future and current Chinese generations in the latest advances in scientific and medical knowledge, through the AstraZeneca Academy. The company also plays an active role in public health promotion campaigns throughout China. Several AstraZeneca philanthropic programmes and charitable donations are directed at bringing value to China’s peoples by facilitating economic development and social welfare.
Philippe de Gentile-Williams, General Manager Europe, Cathay Pacific Airways, London, said:
‘The judges were highly impressed with AstraZeneca’s entry. The combination of the company’s R&D work, their development of China as a key market for their products and their training and education programmes set AstraZeneca apart as a company that has evolved its work in the region beyond the traditional manufacturing model. AstraZeneca’s numerous commitments within the region represent a long-term strategy that benefits the Chinese economy and places a reliance on the skills and commitment of the local people. For these reasons, the panel agreed that AstraZeneca was a worthy recipient of the 2006 Pacific Star Award.”
David Brennan, Chief Executive Officer of AstraZeneca, said: “We are thrilled to be a winner of the Pacific Star Award. Through years of rigorous investments, AstraZeneca China has developed into a well established organisation hosting a state-of-the-art manufacturing site in Wuxi, which is AstraZeneca’s biggest manufacturing investment in Asia. The company has taken the lead in the research area in China with its multi-centre clinical trials and the establishment of the first clinical research centre which covers the entire East Asia region. Our Innovation Centre China will be one of the most advanced scientific research centres outside of the UK, Sweden and USA. Having our successes formally acknowledged by such a prestigious Chinese company such as Cathay Pacific acts as an official seal of approval which will resonate positively with our Chinese customers and employees alike.”
