The initial supply of Nexium IV during the first launches will come from existing production lines. The new facility, which will be located on the Gärtuna Site in Södertälje, will be fully operational in 2005.
AstraZeneca has one of the most promising R&D pipelines in the pharmaceutical industry and the manufacturing and supply organisation has been selectively expanded to support the ongoing and future launches.
“Two of our most important recent new product launches, the acid inhibitor ‘Nexium’ and the asthma inhaler ‘Symbicort’, demonstrated how new products are introduced successfully into production and how quickly global launches of megabrands can be achieved,” said Barrie Thorpe, Executive Vice President Operations, of AstraZeneca.
During 2001 AstraZeneca invested $665 million in production facilities worldwide. The company has 34 production sites in 20 countries and has more than 14,000 employees working with manufacturing and supply.
