ASTRAZENECA DONATES £60,000 FOR MEDICAL TEXT BOOKS IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD

AstraZeneca announced today that it will provide a £60,000, four-year grant to BookPower, a non-profit organisation which provides medical and nursing text books at a subsidised price to students in Africa. The AstraZeneca grant will be used to fund medical texts covering the subjects of Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Immunology and Infection.
“Text books remain the major and often the only medium of instruction to medical students in most of the developing world, yet the provision of textbooks globally is far below the necessary standard,” said Dr Barry Furr, Chief Scientist and Head of the Project Evaluation Group, AstraZeneca. “AstraZeneca is proud of our partnership with BookPower, which dates back to 1998, and hopes that our grant will ensure the proper training of medical students, which is so important to the creation of a solid healthcare infastructure in Africa.”

“The availability of and accessibility of high-quality, up-to-date, relevant health learning materials is absolutely essential to the proper training of healthcare professionals, “ said Richard Stileman, Deputy Chairman, BookPower. “With the help of AstraZeneca and our other corporate sponsors, we can continue to support the burgeoning healthcare systems in developing countries, especially those in Africa.”

BookPower is a unique charity that provides high quality, affordable textbooks for tertiary students in developing countries at prices that they can afford. BookPower works closely with publishers in the UK to provide run-ons of up-to-date textbooks. These are then sold to students through booksellers in low-income countries. Because the books are bought, not given away, there is no wastage. BookPower operates in 37 countries in English-speaking Africa, the Indian sub-continent and the Caribbean.
