In the research of new medicines, we aim to use the latest scientific advances.
The research function Discovery Enabling Capabilities and Sciences (DECS) comprises specialist technical expertise which supports drug projects globally across AstraZeneca in:
- support for identification of new lead compounds (“lead generation”) is provided from Compound Sciences and Cell, Protein and Structural Science capabilities.
- support for candidate drug compounds to improve their likelihood of success as they move into development (“translational science”) is provided by capabilities such as genetics, imaging, transgenics.
In addition to these technical support capabilities, DECS also hosts:
- a department of Continuous Business Improvement, which provides a central resource for application of process improvement tools, such as Lean Sigma, and statistical tools.
- a Science and Technology Alliances group which accesses external expertise through collaborations and partnerships
- Partnering in Enabling Technologies
The purpose of DECS is to support current drug discovery projects in the AstraZeneca pipeline and participate in continuous improvement projects which will strengthen the pipeline in the future, ultimately bringing benefit to patients through more effective medicines.
