We want to push the boundaries of medical science for the benefit of patients around the world
Medical need
The medical need is growing with the increasing and aging populations. The world population has doubled in the last 50 years from three billion to six billion and is expected to reach nine billion by 2050.
Small molecules, biologicals and vaccines
We have broadened our capability to address disease mechanisms with the addition of our world-class biologics and vaccines unit MedImmune.
Disease areas
We focus our resources on six therapy areas where we believe our skills and resources can make the most difference. These areas include some of the world's most serious illnesses and together represent a major worldwide burden of disease:
Global reach
We employ around 12,000 people at 17 principal R&D centres in 8 countries.
In 2008, our R&D spend totalled more than $5 billion
