Reporting performance
We are committed to communicating openly and honestly about the work we are doing to meet our CR commitments and drive continuous improvement in our performance.
Between 2000 and 2006, we published an annual printed CR Summary Report, which was distributed to shareholders alongside our annual reports. View/download copies of these Summary Reports.
In 2007, we changed our approach and included CR reporting within our Annual Report to reflect our increasing integration of CR-related issues into everyday business management. In 2008, we are continuing to take an integrated approach to CR reporting within our Annual Report.
This dedicated Responsibility section of our website, which is updated throughout the year, will continue to provide detailed statistics and further information about our CR performance together with the latest Company positions in key issue areas.
Our target audience is a wide one. Through our Annual Report and Form 20F Information and this website, we hope to meet the CR information needs of all our stakeholders and others who have an interest in our business, including CR research and ranking organisations.
The performance data, as well as details of our progress throughout this section of our website, refers to the year 1 January – 31 December 2008, unless otherwise indicated. View a summary of our performance over the last three years.
DATA AND SCOPE
The Responsibility section of our website covers all the facilities related to our healthcare business, with the general exception of MedImmune, KuDOS and Arrow Therapeutics. Work continues on aligning these business units with AstraZeneca’s policies and processes and whilst we cannot yet integrate their performance data across all of our reporting, we have made some progress during the year. Where combined data is available, it is provided throughout this Responsibility section of our website, with a footnote to indicate its inclusion.
COMMENT ON SAFETY, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT (SHE) DATA
Businesses divested from the Company since merger are included up to the date of divestment. For example, data for Marlow Foods is included up to and including Q1 2003 and data for Durascan is included up to and including Q2 2004. The exceptions to this are Zeneca Agrochemicals, whose divestment was envisaged at the time of the merger, and also joint ventures.
After AstraZeneca was formed in April 1999, we introduced a new reporting system to monitor safety, health and environmental data. These data are received quarterly from all parts of AstraZeneca by the AstraZeneca SHE department. This includes AstraTech, Aptium Oncology and from 2008, Kudos and Arrow Therapeutics. Each facility is required to report performance against a set of criteria defined in a global reporting procedure. The data are evaluated and management reports are generated. Currently 149 submissions of data are received from 114 locations in 65 countries.
Regular review of the data is carried out to ensure accuracy and consistency. This has led to slight changes in the statistics produced for previous years. None of the changes is statistically significant. The statistics quoted in this report are generated from the revised data.
