East Africa

Improving health is one of the toughest challenges facing the world today. As a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca has a key contribution to make through the discovery, development, manufacturing and commercialization of medicines for six important areas of healthcare: cancer, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, infection, neuroscience, respiratory and inflammation

AstraZeneca East Africa is currently represented in four countries i.e. Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. Kenya is the hub of East Africa business and offers marketing & sales support to the rest of the EAC community. With Non communicable diseases becoming an increasing burden in East Africa, notably within the area of cancer, both Kenya and Ethiopia have been able to positively impact their respective communities by introducing breast cancer access programs that have made it possible for women not only to gain better access to AstraZeneca breast cancer medicines, but that have seen the medical and support community better equipped to support patients.

The AstraZeneca Axios breast project in Ethiopia was introduced in 2005, in partnership with the Tikur Anbessa University Hospital in Addis Ababa and has seen strong strides in the development of breast cancer treatment guidelines, strengthening of the referral system in Ethiopia, and providing donations of tamoxifen and anastrazole to needy Ethiopian women. In Kenya, the Pambazuka breast health initiative ,launched in 2011 has enabled easier access to AstraZeneca breast cancer medicines and offered stronger patient support through training of Healthcare professionals, volunteer workers and caregivers.

In embracing a new way of doing business, AstraZeneca East Africa has also introduced a new initiative, i.e. the investment into a three year Trust Fund that will aim to support local research, notably in the areas of Cardiovascular, Gastroenterology and Infectious diseases. Additionally, the introduction of innovative ways to better educate healthcare professionals has seen the launch of the “Great Minds” program, which allows medical representatives to add value in their doctor visits by offering state of the art pre-recorded medical talks straight from their i-Pads at the doctors own time and convenience. The recent launch of the Specialists Learning Series (SLS) has also given Kenya specialists a much needed platform to share and exchange knowledge on hot, current medical topics and the company will also be looking at new ways to add even further value to the EAC GP community through top level Symposia in all its key towns across the region.
