Good governance is crucial to ensuring we are well managed and can deliver our strategic priorities, while meeting stakeholder expectations.
We are evolving our approach and developing a roadmap that will ensure we effectively address the most fundamental issues for our business and for society. Our sustainability governance framework includes our sustainability strategy, aims, goals and supporting policies. We are working continuously to ensure these are embedded in the way we operate. Our robust governance model ensures we deliver, monitor and report progress on delivering the framework.
Confirming our priorities
In late 2015, we initiated a refresh of our materiality assessment. We are using the assessment to refine our priorities and confirm our strategy, as we develop a roadmap towards further embedding sustainability into the DNA of our company.
Our sustainability governance model
The AstraZeneca Senior Executive Team (SET) is responsible for our sustainability framework. Non-Executive Director Geneviève Berger oversees its implementation and reports to the Board.
The Sustainability Council is chaired by a SET member, currently Katarina Ageborg, our Chief Compliance Officer, and includes senior leaders from across the business. The Council agrees sustainability priorities, performance metrics and targets for cross-business activities.
The Sustainability Advisory Board provides external insight, feedback and advice to help sharpen our understanding of, and responses to, established and emerging sustainability issues. It currently includes five world-class thought leaders in the sustainability field:
Pankaj Bhatia – Deputy Director, World Resources Institute
Polly Courtice – Director of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership
José Lopez – former Executive Vice President of Operations, Nestlé SA
Mary‐Jane Morifi – Global Capital Campaign Lead, Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust
Jorgen Randers – Professor Emeritus, BI Norwegian Business School.
Our Code of Conduct sets out the ethical standards we expect of everyone who works at AstraZeneca and, along with our global policies, how these are to be translated into consistent actions worldwide.
Our Global Standard Expectations of Third Parties communicates our expected ethical standards for external partners.
