I feel an immense sense of pride in the mentoring programmes. It’s been a huge platform for forming networks and relationships across the ecosystem here in Cambridge. The feedback we get is extraordinarily positive, and apart from anything else, it’s hugely enjoyable.

Inspiring the next generation of start-ups

Entrepreneurial thinking and smart risk-taking are at the heart of what we do at AstraZeneca. We are passionate about supporting innovation in life sciences and helping the next generation of entrepreneurs succeed.

As part of our commitment to contribute to the rich bioscience ecosystems around us, we support a number of initiatives that help fledgling start-ups advance their business ideas.

We connect entrepreneurs with dedicated business mentors, who come from a range of roles within our company and can share their expertise in areas such as business development, communications, intellectual property and R&D. Their role is to help bring together different ways of working and address business challenges in creative ways – and, if needed, connect the entrepreneurs with other experts within AstraZeneca and MedImmune.

Over 75 colleagues from AstraZeneca and MedImmune are now involved in the different schemes, and over 90 start-ups have benefitted from our advice so far.

Our commitment to support the schemes goes beyond just a philanthropic exercise – mentoring is a fantastic opportunity to engage with some innovative new businesses and entrepreneurs, and it allows us challenge thinking within our company and expose our people to new approaches that can be applied back to their own work and the work of their teams.
