We put patients first

Patients play an essential role in our research. By designing our medicines and approach with patient insights, we can help develop medicines that matter to people. Our aim: innovation that improves care and reduces treatment burden.

Why are clinical trials important to R&D?

Clinical trials allow us to assess novel therapies to help us better understand the potential of cutting-edge approaches. They offer earlier access to investigational treatments and provide participants with specialist care, close monitoring, and advanced treatment options, while helping generate evidence that has the potential to improve future care for patients around the world.

Different diseases, same focus on patients

Across every therapy area, our trials share a common theme — putting patients first. We aim to design studies that are representative of the patient population the medicine is intended to treat, less burdensome, and centred on outcomes that matter in everyday life. While many approaches are shared, each therapy area has a distinct focus led by dedicated experts.

Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism (CVRM)

We run large, long‑term clinical trials with people who often have more than one condition, tracking heart, kidney, and metabolic health to address related conditions and help reduce disease burden.

Oncology

We focus on the underlying causes of disease and match treatment options, including investigative combinations, to the cancer’s specific features to deliver potentially meaningful benefits.

Respiratory & Immunology (R&I)

We run large clinical trials to understand and help address the root causes of some of the most common and serious respiratory and immune-mediated diseases impacting patients’ lives, including asthma, COPD, IPF, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Rare disease

We focus on conditions where progress has been limited, and aim to design trials that work for small, widely dispersed rare disease communities, embedding patient insights into every step.

Aiming to improve the patient experience with digital tools

We are continually improving our clinical trials to help enhance patient experience and advance our R&D. We use digital tools to reduce medical visits, provide timely guidance on study activities, capture patient experience during clinical trials, and simplify communication so participants can focus on what matters most: their health.

This includes working closely with Evinova, a separate health tech company within the AstraZeneca group, whose digital approaches support clinical trials and have helped reduce in-person patient visits by up to 40% in some trials, improving participant experience scores, and shortening overall clinical trial timelines.
