AstraZeneca BioVentureHub has enabled over 90 legal agreements between AstraZeneca and SMEs/enterprises/academic groups, harnessing their agility, specialized expertise, and innovative capabilities. This model allows strategically relevant SMEs and academic groups to gain from AstraZeneca’s knowledge & infrastructure, to get tailored product development opportunities and global reach, enabling them to scale innovations and bring products to market more efficiently.
In return, AstraZeneca gets the opportunity to explore cutting-edge technologies and novel approaches, accelerating its R&D pipeline while contributing to a sustainable future.

Lucero, a Swedish biotech company, is developing a platform for scalable 3D cell culture handling, integrating AI, laser optics, and microfluidics to provide more disease-relevant cell models. Moving into AstraZeneca’s BioVentureHub in 2021 facilitated close collaboration with AstraZeneca scientists, enabling Lucero to refine its technology and advance drug discovery.
The BioVentureHub provided essential resources and helped to facilitate legal agreements and lab access, leading to Lucero´s solution being one of the approaches AstraZeneca aims to test with partners in a pilot screen, and Lucero being awarded a €1.3M grant to further develop the cell handling platform, ultimately enhancing drug discovery and accelerating promising candidates to the clinic.
Nyctea Technologies, a company spun out from Chalmers University of Technology in 2020, collaborates with AstraZeneca through the BioVentureHub to address a critical challenge in biopharmaceutical manufacturing: the purification process. Nyctea’s innovative technology, which reduces reliance on harmful chemicals and extensive water use, aims to streamline production, cut costs, and increase yield. By leveraging AstraZeneca’s resources and expertise,
Nyctea is working to develop a more sustainable and efficient purification method that could significantly enhance biopharmaceutical manufacturing, ultimately accelerating the development of next-generation medical treatments.
NanoSIMS, a cutting-edge imaging technology, is hosted at AstraZeneca's BioVentureHub in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg. This collaboration bridges academic and pharmaceutical expertise, advancing research in drug discovery by enabling precise subcellular analysis of drug interactions. Key outcomes include the development of DrugSIMS for measuring drug uptake and the Molecular Content Calculator for enhancing evaluation precision. This collaboration not only accelerates the development of advanced medicines but also showcases the power of integrating academic innovation into the pharmaceutical industry.
Waters Corporation, a leader in analytical technologies, has deepened its collaboration with AstraZeneca through the BioVentureHub. By co-locating at AstraZeneca’s R&D site in Gothenburg, Waters and AstraZeneca have co-developed cutting-edge mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography tools. These innovations enhance AstraZeneca’s ability to analyze complex biological samples, identify biomarkers and develop personalized treatments. This collaboration has accelerated drug discovery, improved data integration, and strengthened the innovation ecosystem, highlighting the effectiveness of the BioVentureHub in fostering impactful collaborations.
