Bangkok – AstraZeneca (Thailand) Company Limited, in collaboration with the NF Club Thailand and government and private sector partners, organised the 7th NF1 Awareness Day Thailand at the Lido Connect Centre in Siam Square. This initiative aims to disseminate accurate knowledge and understanding about Neurofibromatosis (NF) as a rare disease to the general public and society. The goal is to foster a positive attitude and reduce the gap between NF patients and the general public while showcasing the potential for disease diagnosis and treatment within the current Thai public health system. The event also promotes the concept of being “BORN A FIGHTER”, demonstrating patients' strength compared to survivors, supporting them with morale and encouragement to move forward in society confidently.
Prof. Dr. Vorasuk Shotelersuk, Deputy Dean for the Research Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, states, “Neurofibromatosis (NF) is classified as a rare disease. The severity of the symptoms will vary. In some cases, the symptoms are visible, such as a lump growing on the skin. In other cases, the symptoms cannot be detected with the naked eye. Data estimates suggest that there are approximately 20,000 patients in Thailand. Globally, the prevalence is about 1 in 2,500 to 4,000 people, meaning that of 8 billion individuals, around 2 to 3 million are affected by Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). This condition is caused by a genetic abnormality on chromosome 17, leading to abnormal growth of nerve cells. If there is a family history of the disease, there is a risk of genetic transmission. Neurofibromatosis (NF) is not contagious through contact or the respiratory system but is often mistakenly perceived as a contagious skin disease, resulting in societal discrimination against some patients. The disease is characterised by tumours that can spread throughout the body and, in some cases, are visibly prominent. These tumours can also affect the function of internal organs or structures. Even after surgical removal, new tumours can develop. At present, there is no definitive cure for this condition in the medical field, but there are treatments available that can improve the quality of life for patients. Efforts are also being made to raise public awareness and understanding of this disease, which helps patients live their lives with encouragement and support.”
Nowadays in Thailand, the Excellence Center for Genomics and Precision Medicine utilises genomics technology, a modern medical innovation that analyses genetic information alongside other environmental and clinical data. This approach aids in accurate diagnosis and prognosis, allowing doctors to select the most appropriate treatment and medication for each patient, ensuring the best possible outcomes. This technology plays a significant role in analysing the genetics of patients with Neurofibromatosis (NF), aiding in the selection of appropriate treatments. It also provides valuable information for those at risk, assisting them in planning their future lives and family decisions.
Mr. Roman Ramos, President of AstraZeneca Thailand and Frontier Markets, shares, “AstraZeneca, a world-class drug research and development company, has developed innovative medicines to provide comprehensive treatment coverage, focusing on patients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), cancer, and rare diseases. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for patients by developing effective disease treatments and fostering social awareness. We are proud to collaborate with the NF Club Thailand, along with government and private sector partners, to support the 77th NF1 Awareness Day in Thailand. This event aims to promote accurate knowledge and understanding of Neurofibromatosis (NF). We have chosen Siam Square as the venue, a central hub for people of all ages, to symbolise the acceptance of differences between patient groups and the general public, ensuring that these patients feel included and not isolated in society.”
Mr. Boon Putthipongthanachot, a Thai Rare Disease Foundation Representative, adds, “As the Foundation for Rare Disease Patients, we serve as the primary intermediary providing comprehensive assistance to patients. This includes covering medical expenses through donations and developing occupational skills to help patients earn an income and support their families. The foundation also collaborates with the government to disseminate accurate knowledge and create a sustainable care system for rare disease patients. Current statistics show that 3.5 million Thai people suffer from rare diseases, with more than 7,000 different diseases, each with unique symptoms and treatments. Some diseases have only 1-2 cases in the country, making it challenging to form patient groups for each disease. By organising today's event, we aim to foster greater acceptance and understanding of Neurofibromatosis (NF1) patients in society, encouraging them to move forward and live equally within the community. The theme of today's event is “BORN A FIGHTER”.
At the 7th NF1 Awareness Day in Thailand, activities included discussions on the topics “Facing and Overcoming the Challenges of Neurofibromatosis (NF)” and “Overcoming Obstacles and Strengthening the Potential for Dealing with Neurofibromatosis (NF)”. These discussions featured patient group representatives and medical faculty experienced in treating Neurofibromatosis (NF). The event provided a platform for discussing and sharing strategies to improve the quality of life for patients, offering them encouragement and support to live equally within society. The significant turnout and engagement from attendees marked a successful collaboration among all partners involved.
