New data demonstrate the connection between heart failure and transthyretin-mediated amyloid cardiomyopathy, underscoring the need for earlier detection and diagnosis
AstraZeneca will present clinical and real-world data across its leading cardiovascular, renal and metabolism (CVRM) portfolio at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2024, in London, United Kingdom, from 30 August to 2 September 2024. A total of 38 abstracts will be featured, with a focus on unmet need in heart failure (HF) and transthyretin-mediated amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), as well as other chronic diseases.
New evidence will examine the connection between HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and a lesser-known condition called ATTR-CM.1 ATTR-CM is estimated to affect up to 15% of individuals subsequently diagnosed with HFpEF, but this specific diagnosis is often missed and is fatal if left untreated.2-6 Key presentations at ESC Congress on the connection between HFpEF and ATTR-CM include:
- Patient characteristics and incidence of cardiac amyloidosis: a retrospective observational study in the UK investigating the incidence of cardiac amyloidosis, which is often associated with a high mortality rate due to sudden or progressive HF.7
- CARDIO-TTRansform cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) sub-analysis:* a new study design represents the largest CMR study conducted in ATTR-CM patients, intended to evaluate the impact of eplontersen on the cardiac amyloid burden.8
- Results from the multi-country OverTTuRe study: real-world contemporary evidence highlighting how the diverse presentation of ATTR-CM often delays definitive diagnosis and treatment for patients.9
In addition, data presented at ESC Congress further demonstrates clear metabolic and kidney interconnections with HF, and the importance of taking a holistic approach in treatment:
- The InspeCKD Study: CKD, alongside T2D, is the most common comorbidity in people living with HF, yet awareness of this interconnection remains low.10 This study investigates the urgent need for screening, diagnosis and treatment of CKD for HF patients to improve outcomes and slow disease progression.10
