A small molecule is a low molecular weight compound (less than 900 daltons) organic compound.

Small molecule drugs help regulate a biological target such as an enzyme, channel or receptor to modify a disease process. Most drugs on the market today are small molecules and most are delivered orally. Due to their small size, small molecules have the benefit of being able to pass across cell membranes to reach targets in the cell.
